What is orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment usually involves the wearing of braces, either removable or fixed, together with the extraction of teeth in most cases. Very occasionally jaw surgery may also be required.

Why might I need orthodontic treatment?
Not every one needs orthodontic treatment. If you are happy with the appearance of your teeth and they function well, you will not need braces. Teeth which are only slightly crooked are often not treated as mild crowding is considered acceptable.

There are three main reasons for having orthodontic treatment:
• Improve the appearance of the teeth and face
• Improve the health of the teeth and gums
• Improve function i.e. to make it easier to eat

What types of braces are there?
There are those which can be removed for cleaning, known as removable braces. The second type of brace is fixed to the teeth and cannot be removed for cleaning.
